Seven Things

Author Loren Rhoads recently challenged me to write seven things about myself and being an author. They are as follows.

  1. I started reading as a young child to make money. My parents would give me a penny for every book I read in a year, up to 100. So, I read like crazy, knowing I could make $1.00 if I read 100 or more.1201141335d
  2. My handwriting has changed drastically during my life. As a child, we moved a lot and every school was teaching a different kind of writing. My second grade teacher asked my mother why my stick/ball printing was so horrid. Mom said, “She’s been taught printing, cursive, leftward-slant D’Nealian, had to write with her left hand (hand injury) and her last school taught 50% of her lessons in Spanish. Give her a few weeks and she’ll learn stick/ball printing if you want her to!” As an adult, people have commented on my strange writing…sometimes its proper cursive, sometimes it’s a mix, and sometimes I’ll throw in some weird character that doesn’t match with the rest of the font. This happens more frequently now that I have tendonitis, which makes my hand hurt when I write too much. It also causes handwriting experts to scratch their heads, but it is all a product of my mobile childhood.hand
  3. I read four to five books at a time and rarely buy books anymore because of my review job, my writer friends always wanting me to read their work, and writing my own stuff. If I do buy books, they are usually signed copies meant to support the author and I rarely read those.
  4. The first full novel I ever wrote was an 86-page, handwritten in pencil, YA book about child actors who become involved in a terrorist hijacking. I was eleven.
  5. I never knew I wanted to be an author until I was in my twenties. I aspired to be a singer, but despite that, I always wrote stories in my journals. Mostly dreams of what I wanted my life to become.
  6. My characters talk to me all the time, every day. There is not a day that goes by in which one of them is not nagging me to write.

Emerian Rich, Heather Roulo, and Laurel Anne Hill at BayCon Writer’s Convention

  7. I really enjoy geeking out with my favorite author friends about books we’ve read or even movie plots and song lyrics that inspired us.

The Vampire Matrix

Garlic Not a factor Stake Doesn’t work
Sunlight/ UV Causes sunburn or tan Holy water/crosses Causes laughter
Running water Doesn’t faze them Drowning They don’t have to breathe
Silver Hurts more than wood? Fire They enjoy fire
Coffin sleep a must? no Homeland dirt a must? no
Decapitation That will kill them Do they need to be invited in? no
Do they sparkle? Hell no Do they cast a shadow? yes
Do they show up on film or video? yes Do they have a reflection? yes
Eye color change with hunger? Not usually Blood tears? Yes
Die if not fed? They go insane/feral When killed, what is left? A bloody corpse
Eat solid food? Not usually Create offspring by blood? Yes
Have sex? Often Fertile? Only Lilith
Immortal? Yes Enhanced strength? Yes
Enhanced senses? Yes Enhanced speed? Yes
Enhanced healing? Yes Flight? Yes, they have bat-like wings
Shapeshifting? Not yet Psychic? Yes, they can read the minds of those weaker than themselves.
Mind control? Some, but it is not common. Does their blood heal mortals? Wouldn’t know, this isn’t something they would ever try.
What are their fangs like? This is an aspect I do not really get into. They are not a dominant part of their description, but they are there.
Skin color when after rebirth: Some are pale, some are even more pale, and some retain their human hue.
Attractiveness after rebirth: They mostly look the same, but some do get more beautiful (usually when they are particularly demonic). The “curse” manifests in each of them uniquely.
How do they feed? They drink blood from cups, from those kept alive and hanging in designated rooms (or in cages), and from unsuspecting mortal prey.
What does the mortal experience when fed on? A feeling similar to human orgasm. This also occurs when biting into each other.
What do they feed on? Human only? Evil souls only? Any human is fair game to them, although they have been known to feed on each other.
Do they kill? Or only drink? Do they have a conscious? They usually kill their prey, but they don’t always, sometimes they create slaves out of them. My vampires have a conscious, but only toward one another, humans are seen as only as a source of pleasure or fulfillment.
Are there clans or a hierarchy? Yes, there are vampires who have created a hierarchy and then there is the Dark Brood, who are the truly demonic.

How is a vamp created in your world? Vampires are created when one of them drains a human of all their blood and then feeds them drops of their own in the traditional manner.

What happens when they are changed? When created, they are struck by an unbearable pain. The bones of their back break and tear from their skin, folding out from them. Their skin pulls and tightens over the bone, to create large bat-like wings. Their eyes turn black and in some cases, so does their hair. Large claws grow out from where their human nails once were and they cry out in agony. When it is done, they are left trembling in a pool of their own blood, naked and hungry.

goddessesIs religion involved in you vamp world and what kind? My books are seeped in religion. Lilith is the first woman created by God and she is cursed by Him. She goes on to build temples of her own and is worshipped as a Goddess. Those from her temples who are created become the next Goddesses and create their own temples of worship, which is how they are brought human blood to feed on. Ishtar, Hel, Nephthys, Isis, and Anath are examples of Goddesses I have used as characters in my series. Lucifer also has a very large role.

Is war or fighting a big theme in your books? Yes. My books take place in the ancient world, where war was common and knowing battle was expected. In my second book, Sons of Cain, war is a major theme and there is a large battle between vampires and werewolves.

What made vampires a reality in your world? Lilith was cursed by God for attempting to leave Adam and the Garden of Eden. She is the first created, but she is not “tied” in blood to the rest. Her death would have no effect on the others. Cain was also cursed by god and became a demon like Lilith. Together, they have three sons, which Lilith bears as a human woman would, and these three boys are the first vampires of the world.

Who are your top vampire characters?

  1. Lilith- She is smart, tough, manipulative, and beautiful in her own demonic way. As time goes on, she becomes a bit insane and it makes her unpredictable, which I really enjoy. She was created by God as the first woman and is “saved” by Lucifer himself. She was cursed for believing all women are equal to men and she spreads her words of female equality throughout the lands.
  2. Almóðr- This character was a human Viking found on the beach by Lilith’s son, Enosch. I call him The Pale Beast b/c when he was created, his skin turned very pale, his hair turned white, and his eyes became the glazed over stare of death. He is particularly brutal and is used as Enosch’s assassin. He has only one love in his life and that is the Goddess, Hel. Almóðr was created in the early Middle Ages.

Who is your favorite vampire writer? Anne Rice, I find that we have a lot in common in the way that we create our stories and view our characters.

What music goes best with your series? The biggest influence for Goddesses of Lilith is Dax Riggs. His dark, dreamy music really influenced the writing of my book and always inspires me. For the next book, Sons of Cain, I had to get into a much darker place. I listened to the band Cancerslug mostly, which is a really brutal punk band.

Anything else to say to perspective readers about your series?
The first book, Goddesses of Lilith is a collection of five short stories, placed together into one novel. Each section of this book tells the story of a particular vampire Goddess, yet they all flow together, intermingling as one story. It is very pro-feminine in nature and takes a look at ancient mythology in a different perspective.

Sons of Cain is the masculine side of the story. It follows Cain when he leaves Lilith and tells the tale of the men. It is more historic in nature and includes much more war, sex, and violence. These vampires are not nice, they are demons, and they follow the rules and ways of Lucifer. Other beings, such as werewolves and fallen angels, are also part of these stories.

Thank you, Tracy, for sharing your vamps with us!

Join me next time when I grill Dan Shaurette
on what makes his vamps of Lilith’s Love so special.
Do Dan’s vamps sparkle?

What it’s like to be a writer’s best friend

What is it like being a writer’s best friend?

I’ve had a few emails recently that have inspired a new blog series from me. Here’s what you have sent me:

“Emz, can you come over to my house? I’m really bored and I’d love to have you over for tea and biscuits.” ~ Monica from Southampton, UK

“I often wonder how your family feels about you recording all those voices. Do they think you are deranged or do they listen with rapt attention to the live version? I’d like to listen to you record. I bet it’s a hoot.” ~James from Montana, USA

“Just finished reading Night’s Knights last week and have listened to half of Dusk’s Warriors already this weekend. The way your imagination works blows my mind. I bet your friends love hearing your new story ideas. I bet lunch with you when you first think of an idea is an experience. Wish I was a fly on that wall.” Harry from Toronto, Canada

“Wish I knew you in real life, you seem like fun!” Susanne from Ohio, USA

Well, now you will have your chance to get a little glimpse into what it’s like to be my friend and I’ve invited some of my writer friends to share their lives as well. Over the next couple weeks, I will be posting interviews from friends and family of writers. Is it all it’s cracked up to be?

A day with a writer…
First up, I asked my best friend, Ariel, to answer questions about what it’s like to be my friend. We’ve known each other for over fifteen years and I count on her as a confidante and true friend. I think we get along so well because while we share a lot of the same interests, we are complete opposites. I am a dark, nostalgic devil to her blonde, pink-wearing angel.  How she puts up with my crazy Gemini personality mood swings I have no idea, but she was nice enough to answer a few questions while we made a trek around the city.

A holiday trek around San Francisco is our favorite occupation in early December. Stores are decorated with evergreen, shiny bulbs, and lights. The tourists are gone for the most part, but will grow in number as the holidays approach. For our trek, it was just us natives, out enjoying the sights and sounds of the holidays.

We had lunch downtown at our favorite Japanese place. They’ve changed their name many times, but we’ll always remember them as Mr. Hana. Next, we strolled by the holiday windows evaluating them against last years and voting on which was best. Then it was off to Chinatown for a look at scarves and some hot tea. Lastly, we headed to Japantown for shopping and dinner at our favorite restaurant there, Kui Shin Bo.

Ariel always teases me that in order to be my friend, you must pass a quiz with 80% accuracy, fill out a membership form, attend at least seven functions a year, and sign the “No Monkeys, Umbrellas, or Menthol Cough Drops” disclosure agreement. I don’t know if I’m that hard to know, but I do like paperwork, so she might be right. Now she has the opportunity to tell you what I am really like.

What it’s like to be the best friend of a writer.
From the perspective of: Ariel, Emerian’s best friend

How did you meet Emerian?

We worked at that same place and Emz was running a vampire roleplaying game. I asked if I could play. We started talking and found out we had a lot in common.

Why are you such good friends?

We both love to talk and are good listeners. We love vampire stories, planning games, problem solving, and we’re analytical. We both like writing and we’re open minded. We never judge each other. We both have big dreams and a love for art and architecture. Emz likes to plan things and I like to do things, so it works out great. You wouldn’t think so because we are polar opposites like light and dark but, we have a lot in common. Being a writer myself, we are always thinking about new stories or brainstorming new worlds. It keeps me in the “writing” world and inspires me.

When did you find out about her being a writer?

I heard Emz talking about her ‘zine and working out a deal with an artist.

Who are your favorite authors besides Emerian?

I like Anne Rice and Stephen King. Everyone thinks I’m in to romance, but I’m not. Emz is the romantic, not me.

144x212NKWhat is your favorite work of Emerian’s? Who is your favorite character?

Night’s Knights is my favorite work of Emz. I love Sim the bartender because of his personality and name. Martin is another favorite because he is dark and debonair. Even though he’s a geek, he’s the classic vampire type. I really like the underdog, the character who no one else likes or routes for, like Danny. I like Jespa, but I never go for the main characters. Martin is the most like me. I am his fan girl!

What did you do for Emerian that you would never do normally.

I volunteered to help Emz decorate a huge con. I would never do that if not for her.

What was the worst event you attended with Emerian?

When Emz read for the first time at a convention, the room was so hot, we were all dying. It was a small room without windows and people kept closing the door. The con didn’t advertise it well either.

What was the worst thing you had to do at an event?

When someone made me go pass out Emz postcards to the crowd. I was like… “Oh my God, do I have to do this just because I’m with her?” I hate approaching strangers.

What was the best event you attended with Emerian?

When Emz was on three panels in a row where she was reading. I could listen to people read all day. Sometimes at con between panels, we’ll sit outside in the hall and Emz will just read to me, I love that. I also liked when she got invited to a rock concert. We were at a table in the lobby and they treated us like royalty. It was like I was with a rock star.

What is your favorite place to go with Emerian?

We can go anywhere and just read or write together. We can find any place – like the tables above Embarcadero or the beach or one of the libraries. We might end up chatting the whole time, but we also chat about stories and what we’re working on.

emzari3

What do you like about Emerian being a writer?

When people approach us at a fair or event and they want to talk to Emz. They get so excited by her clothes, or makeup, or hair, or writing. It’s really fun to see them as excited about it as she is.

What is a dream you would like to see happen in the future for her?

I can’t wait until Night’s Knights gets made into a movie. I get to be at the premiere and I would have my photo taken with Julien who I think should be played by Alexander Skarsgard (Eric from True Blood).

What is the weirdest thing about being friends with Emerian?

She is always busy and if we go out, somehow it always turns into the career. She doesn’t even try and it happens. Someone is asking about her writing and she is digging out her cards.

Do you ever worry about her writing about you or your life?

No. I worry more if she is taking my picture, but she always asks first. I would be flattered if she wrote about me.

Have you ever read something that you thought was about you or inspired by you?

Yes. Ember, from Dusk’s Warriors. She told me she was inspired to write Ember because of me and that she wanted me to play her in the podcast. I was very flattered. I wish I was that awesome.

****

Thank you Ariel for sharing some insight with the fans about what it’s like to be a writer’s best friend. And, you ARE that awesome! 🙂

Readers, I hope this answers some of your questions about being in my crazy life. Stay tuned to this blog for more interviews with friends and family of writers.
